TRIGGER POINT 2/22/2006
A Silent Protest Review
by Keith Michaels, Just Press Play
This is my second time reviewing a debut album from Corporate Punishment Records, a label I am starting to love and believe in.
A Silent Protest is the debut album from Trigger Point, a hard rock band that claims to be from Los Angeles, CA (their Bio states that they come from three different parts of the country). The band was formed in 2001 by Mike Bashur (guitar), Dave Gentry (drums), and Taylor Wallace (vocals), and joined in 2004 by Paul Kelly (bass).
Trigger Point has a sound reminiscent of many great late 90’s and early 2000’s bands such as Korn, Disturbed, Deftones, and so on. Some may feel that the band is making a mistake by not jumping on the bandwagon filled with today’s trends in rock, but I’m not one of them. That type of hard-charged rock was filled with intelligent ferocity, and Trigger Point is no exception. Having originally formed in 2001, the band has stuck by its roots with an “I don’t care what everyone else is doing” approach and A Silent Protest is a testament to the band’s faith in their work.
The first half of the album opens strong and the title track, Silent Protest, is something most may have already heard on local rock stations. Picking up the Pieces is another strong track that should get some air time very soon, if it isn’t already. This song really showcases that talent of Taylor Wallace’s voice as he transitions from melodic tones to an aggressive growl found in most hard rock today.
The mid way point of the album has a little classical piece called His Final Breath, which is simple, yet pretty (I know, weird talk for a hard rock review). The second half of the album is not quite up to par with the veracity of the first half, but that’s to be expected in a debut.
Before closing, I’d also like to address how impressive a drummer Dave Gentry is. He’s mastered the double base hit, but doesn’t take it to the same extreme found in most metal acts. One listen through will make anyone a Gentry fan, guaranteed.
In the end, anyone that’s a fan of Korn or Distrubed owes it to themselves to pick up Trigger Point – A Silent Protest. As for Corporate Punishment, this is the second album from this label that has impressed me, they have a great eye for Rock talent and I expect great things from this label from now on.
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
