While the perpetual current of post hardcore bands move along at a steady and sometimes a deplorable pace, a few bands of this ilk come along and re-energize the genre with a sense of professionalism and honest depth. SHENOAH’S latest EP, “Bleeding From The Red”, is a impressive illustration of how a band can bend the “rules” that currently mar the scene and have become prohibitive to creativity. With a pedigree of other bands like A COLDER YEAR, CHIMAIRA, RINGWORM and ERASE THE GREY, this band has intertwined these starkly different influences into a palatable post hardcore formula with a subtle exterior of power pop/rock. Rather then relying on the tried and true recipe of placing the thrash then scream against pop punk harmonies, SHENOAH utilized more of a rock/metal fusion in between an occasional hardcore thumping. Specifically, the vocals are graceful more often than not and the earsplitting bellows accented this sound without sounding as though they were taking turns. The rhythms switch back and forth from precise synchronization to gliding melodies in a manor similar to ATREYU or even THRICE. The entire package was well orchestrated and skillfully designed with an occasional formulaic riff but otherwise still diverse enough to keep your interests alive. Having Logan Mader (of MACHINE HEAD fame) as producer certainly helped some and you can identify some of his signature chord progressions from time to time. The only real downside to the album was its length. Five songs just wasn’t sufficient and when they do release the full-length, you can count on a record with an endless re-playability quality unlike many of the bands who have immersed themselves in this particular genre.
