As
a band you know you must be doing something right when you get an email
from D.Randall Blythe (Lamb Of God) describing your album as "artfully
orchestrated brutality", which is exactly the case with Canadian
thrashers 3 Mile Scream. Here vocalist Matt McGachy talks new members,
film clips and exactly how the compliment from one of their biggest
influences came about:
HW: In July this year, 3 Mile Scream recruited new bassist Aries Kapnias – how is the new line up working for you?
MM: We are really
happy with our new line up. It was sad to part ways with Mike Marino
but we have now a more coherent sense of kinship which is working out
really well for us.
HW: You released
your full length debut album “A Prelude to Our Demise” through
Corporate Punishment Records last November. Are you working on any new
material at the moment for a follow up album?
MM: We have already
recorded the new album. It s called; “A Glimpse Of Hope” and it has
continued in the same direction as "Mourning The Lost", "Dare To
Question" and "Our Blackened Sun". It is as heavy as we possibly could
make it while staying as melodic as we possibly could. We have some
real sing along choruses on this one which I am very pleased with.
We are currently waiting for our Label to tell us that they are ready to release it because we most certainly are.
HW: During November and December 2007 3 Mile Scream are touring in Canada – any plans to tour further abroad?
MM: We are currently
at a stage where we have stretched our wings as far as we can
independently. We have tried to conquer as much of our own country on
our own but now we need the assistance of a Booking Agency who could
helps us get onto some package deals which would brings us into the US
Market which is where we most definitely need to be.
HW: On your
myspace page there is a comment from D.Randall Blythe (Lamb of God)
describing your music as “artfully orchestrated brutality” – how did it
feel to get such a compliment from someone you list as one of your
influences?
MM: We have met
Randy a number of times but none of them were as nerve racking as the
first. I was terribly nervous because I knew that he was attending my
jam…but after meeting him for five minutes I was comfortable because he
was so easy going and relaxed. When he left Montreal to head back home
we gave him a copy of the CD and a few days later we got an emailed
quote about the album. We were all ecstatic and honored to read these
words about us from the hand of a man we all idolized.
HW: 3 Mile Scream have released a video for “Our Blackened Sun” – who was the director you worked with on this video?
MM: The director was
Chad Archibald (ARISE AND RUIN) and we shot it in Ontario over one
day. It was a great experience and we have been getting some great
feedback from it.
HW: Did the band have much input/ideas for the making of this clip?
MM: We had seen the
video which he had made for Arise and Ruin and we told him that we
wanted something with in the same vein as that. As it turns out we
filmed the video in the same building as theirs…just in a different
location.
HW: The video for
“Our Blackened Sun” was in the Cravefest Video awards in the Best Video
Category, coming in at #41 in a worldwide competition – that’s quite an
achievement! Were you happy with this result?
MM: Wow! I had no Idea!!! I think that is great…
HW: This video also premiered on Much Music in October – have you received a good response to this?
MM: We have! They have
played the video a few times since and a lot of our fans are telling us
they saw it and that is the reason why they made it out to a live
performance because they were so impressed by the video.
HW: You guys have a 3 Mile Scream guitar pick through In Tune Guitar Picks – did you guys come up with the design for this?
MM: It happened to be a leftover design for a T-shirt…we just recycled it.
HW: Are these picks available for purchase or are they just for the use of you guys?
MM: As for right
now they are only for the guitarist…but we have been getting a lot of
compliments and replies seeking them so I believe that we will begin to
sell them shortly.
HW: Thanks for your time – enjoy the rest of your upcoming shows – keep thrashing!!
MM: That’s what we do best…after drinking!
