Success a vexing prospect for Amity Lane

    December 14, 2006 03:59 PM
Fans of the now-defunct rock band Trust Company who wish to see singer/guitarist Kevin Palmer and bassist Josh Moates' new project Amity Lane (tickets | music) may only have one chance to see them live in support of the group's debut album, "The Sound of Regret."

"When we started this band, we really didn't want to tour," Moates said. "We just wanted to do what we wanted to do. We wanted to put it on the website and just see what happened. We wanted to do it just to have fun."

Moates added that relentless touring played a big part in Trust Company's break-up.

"The only reason we're doing the tour in January is because I own a photography studio and that is the only time I can get off to do it. The rest of the year we probably won't tour at all. Three weeks isn't going to be that bad as opposed to nine months like it was last time."

Moates and Palmer were the writing duo responsible for Montgomery, AL-based Trust Company's hits "Downfall," "Running From Me" and "Stronger." After selling more than 900,000 copies of its 2001 debut, "The Lonely Position of Neutral," and 2005's "True Parallels," the group disbanded as Trust Company and re-emerged as Amity Lane with Palmer's wife, Layla. "The Sound of Regret" was released Oct. 31 on Corporate Punishment Records. The lead single, "Drown You Out," is making an impact on radio.

Moates explained he is torn about the prospect of Amity Lane equaling or surpassing the popularity of Trust Company. The more well known the band becomes, the more it will have to tour.

"I wish we had a little more airplay, but we just have to go tour and see what stations pick it up," he said. "It would be cool, but it's not about that. The last thing we want to do is get it to the point where we have to tour all the time. If we sell a lot of records, we'd have to go tour. We just did it for ourselves, mainly."

Opening all of Amity Lane's upcoming shows is New Orleans-based Hydrovibe (tickets | music), which contributed the track "Killer Inside" to the "Saw 3" soundtrack. The song is streaming at the band's MySpace page.
