Bleeding in the Red
by Josh, Foundry Music
I just received a copy of the new SHENOAH album, entitled Bleeding In The Red. For those who don’t know, Shenoah consists of Rob Montague, Jason Hager, Vince Difranco, Ben Hollowell, and Matt Danko. I popped it in and added it to iTunes and have been listening to it a lot this weekend.
The first track, “Age of the White Dove”, starts the disc off. From the second it started to play I knew it was a great track. By far my favorite track on the disc, Montague’s vocals are excellent on this track. The band sounds phenomenal so far.
Next up is “Ashes to Ashes”, which sounds destined for a video game soundtrack. As with “Age of the White Dove”, the vocals and playing of the band sound excellent. However, the song just doesn’t stand out as something special. I like the track but I don’t feel it is at the same caliber as the rest of the disc.
“Bullets and Numbers” sounds harder than the first two tracks of Bleeding In The Red. It is a definite “fight song” and I really like it. The growling vocals of Vince DiFranco were powerful and made this track stand out from the rest.
“Telephone Bruises” was the next track on the album. Just as the rest of the album, this was a great song. The actual lyrics of the song are corny but the quality of the vocals made up for it and it was very enjoyable. Shenoah has excellent vocals, in my opinion. This is an amazing album.
The album ends with “Scent of a Dead Rose”, which was a good choice. The song comes in slowly and then those growling vocals of DiFranco hit hard and fast. Rob Montague then takes the singing load for the track. “Scent of a Dead Rose” is my second favorite song on this disc. It has a great contrast of vocals and the band plays really well on this one.
The album has ended and blown me away. I wasn’t expecting much when I picked it up but I was pleasantly surprised with Shenoah’s effort. I would definitely recommend this record to anyone. I have only one complaint; I wish it had been longer.
